Of all the Gauls, the Belgae are the bravest

We visited Tongeren, Belgium oldest city. The main reason was the statue of Ambiorix, prince of the Eburones, elader of a Belgic tribe of north-eastern Gaul (Gallia Belgica), where modern Belgium is located. In the 19th century Ambiorix became a Belgian national hero because of his resistance against Julius Caesar, as written in Caesar's Commerntarii de Bello Gallico. He was one the only one who defeated the Roman troups.

Caesar wrote about Ambiorix in his commentary about his battles against the Gauls: "De Bello Gallico". In this text he also wrote the famous line: "Of all the Gauls, the Belgae are the bravest." ("...Horum omnium fortissimi sunt Belgae...").

Before we left Bas very curious about this figure out of comic books, but when he saw the hugh, impressive statue he was a bit startled, but afterwards it was better again. That is was he says himself. We also visited the basilica and the old city walls.

We bezochten Tongeren, de oudste stad van België. De voornaamste reden was het stambeeld van Ambiorix, koning van de Gallische stam de Eburonen, die in een gebied in het tegenwoordige België en gedeeltelijk in Nederland leefden. Hij werd vanaf de 19e eeuw een Belgische historische held vanwege zijn verzet tegen de Romeinse bezetters, zoals beschreven staat in Caesars "Commenatarii de bell Gallico". De naam Ambiorix betekent Rijke koning.

Caesar schreef over Ambiorix in het verslag over zijn veldslagen tegen de Galliërs: "De Bello Gallico". In die tekst schreef hij ook de beroemde woorden: De Belgae zijn de dappersten aller Galliërs ("...Horum omnium fortissimi sunt Belgae...").

Voor we vertrokken was Bas heel benieuwd naar deze man; maar toen hij hem zag was hij een beetje geschrokken omdat hij zo groots was, maar daarna was het weer beter. Althans dat is wat hij zelf beweerde. We bezochten ook de baseliek en de oude stadwallen rondom het centrum.
